JBF's first podcast on transgender people in sport is now online!

No research has yet been conducted in the Netherlands into the sporting behaviour and the degree of perceived acceptance and negativity in sport among a large group of transgender people. What is the level of participation in sport among this group?

No research has yet been conducted in the Netherlands into the sporting behaviour and the degree of perceived acceptance and negativity in sport among a large group of transgender people. What is the level of participation in sport among this group? What specific meanings do transgender people attach to sport and what challenges do they encounter in sport?

In order to answer these questions, the Alliantie Gelijkspelen 4.0 (Equal Play Alliance 4.0), a partnership between various organisations promoting the acceptance of LGBTI+ people in sport, together with the Mulier Institute and Transgender Network Netherlands (TNN), conducted its first online survey among transgender people. In this first JBF podcast, sports journalist Tim Dekkers discusses the most important findings of this study with Sophie Schers (trans woman and policy advisor at TNN), Lucas Nieuwenhuis (trans man) and Thijs de Greeff (JBF workshop leader). The focus is on their own experiences in sport and the opportunities that exist to make the sports sector more inclusive for transgender people.

In this podcast, Sophie, Lucas and Thijs discuss the most important recommendations that are in line with the guidelines for gender and sex-diverse people in sport presented by NOC*NSF at a digital symposium on Diversity and Inclusion. “Be prepared as a club and don't wait for a transgender person to come forward” is an important piece of advice from Sophie. Be sure to listen to this podcast to be well prepared and learn how you can contribute to greater inclusion in sport for everyone!
